BUST DOWN THE DOOR AGAIN!

While doing some research for another project I stumbled upon the Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries. This duo is made up of digital artists Young-Hae Chang and Marc Voge. Currently these two reside in Seoul. The medium they use is flash animation, making text fly across your monitor to the beat of original jazz music. The jazz music is original, and the stories that go across the screen are not only original, but also funny, freaky, and always thought provoking.

What I like most about these digital works is the idea of composing the stories written on the screen in my head. The pace of the text varies which keeps my eyes interested, I don't know, I just don't want to look away.

Their website is here: http://www.yhchang.com where you can click on any the links that will lead you right to one of their works.

One work that I found interesting though, was BUST DOWN THE DOOR AGAIN! GATES OF HELL- VICTORIA VERSION which is a first person story talking about being brought out into the streets by figures in the night, it makes you feel slightly uneasy. This piece is actually a remix of BUST DOWN THE DOORS! While the stories are the same, the remix is different because of the music and text pace, as well as the background is a shot of the gallery that BUST DOWN THE DOORS! was displayed....on nine internet refrigerators.

Looking at a past project

Saw this on my friend's facebook and thought it was worth sharing. Reminded me of a classmates rendition of The Last Supper for a project we had to do in class.

Application of "The White Manifesto"

Reading The White Manifesto by Lucio Fontana, I wanted to explore the idea of 4D art. I always seem to have the hardest time visualizing a fourth dimension. I think I figured it out though. In The White Manifesto Fontana wrote "[We ask scientists] to direct part of their research towards discovering of the luminous and malleable substance and instruments to produce sounds that permit the development of fourth dimensional art."

The idea of fourth dimensional art means somehow incorporating time into one's work, either by light, or sound, anything to convey this.

Lemieux Pilon is a company that is all about 4D art. Led by directors Michael Lemieux and Victor Pilon, This company draws in an audience by surrounding them with their show. What I love is how holograms are incorporated into the show, the actors use them as props or even treat them as fellow actors on stage. Check out the link to see what I mean and get a sample of La Belle et la Bete, one of the 30 shows that this company has toured since 1983: http://www.4dart.com/home.html

I think Fontana would be pleased to see that we've come a long way in the development of new ways to create art. Technology has advanced since his manifesto was written (1940's) and therefore it was become more incorporated into art today.

Pin up art

Last week one of my classmates showed me a hilarious photo of men taking stereotypically female pin up poses for photos, and it was hilarious! Heres the link: Male Pin-up

I thought it would be a fun blog post to talk about my favorite pin up artist: Gil Elvgren. Pin-up art has always been one of my favorite genres of art, it's usually simple, fairly classy, and leaves a lot to the imagination. Gil Elvgren did a great job posing women in ways that were only slightly provocative, but really can make a man drool.
Just thought I'd share!

Gil Elvgren's website can be found here: http://www.gilelvgren.com/GE/index.php

Indoor clouds. mind blown

Daaaaamn! Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde decided to defy any sort of weather logic and create clouds indoors...yes, indoor clouds. Smilde, however, must carefully balance the room's humidity and temperature to keep the clouds (which are created using a smoke machine) together for a short period of time; the contrast of the cloud becomes pronounced by the use of backlighting by Smilde.

"I wanted to make the image of a typical Dutch raincloud inside a space," said Smilde. I love this concept that he has created into a series of clouds in different settings, but what I keep wanting to find out is how artists come up with such original concepts! I just want to get inside an artist's head, dig around a while, and see what they have going on up in their noggin.
