Types and Fonts and Things

Today in class we were given our next assignment...creating a triptych using fonts and typeface. I can already tell this is going to be one of my favorite projects.

Some might find it weird, but I love fonts. Ever since being a part of my high school yearbook, I have been intrigued by fonts. I've taken a couple workshops for Yearbook class and really enjoyed learning about different uses for fonts to  help  convey an emotion, or get a point across in a subtle way, whether one is using type in a piece of art, or making an advertisement (which is an art in itself).

Hands down, my favorite font has to be Helvetica. What's so great is the how modern this font is, even though it was created in 1957. I love simple, and modern, and I feel that this font really reflects that.

Samsung Galaxy S3....not really my thing.

Ran across this commercial yesterday while watching some football, and couldn't help but laugh. I enjoy my Apple products, and let's face it, if I had the money I'm pretty sure I'd own everything in the Apple store. Maybe it's because Samsung was sued by Apple, but it's obvious that's who Samsung is poking fun at in one of their new commercials for the Samsung Galaxy S3. Great looking phone, but I think I'll stick with my Apple products, thanks.

The Readings

Understanding the concepts and following what the different authors are trying to write is pretty difficult for me to understand, but after reading some of the articles a couple times, key ideas become easier to comprehend.

While reading Digital Visual Culture: Theory and Practice I'm starting to look different medium's of art in a new light. This book glances different theories as to how to look at digital art compared to what is considered "traditional" art.

I have never thought of art created on a computer (digital media) as well...not art. In the article Aesthetics and Interactive Art by Karen Cham, it's mentioned that art critics and others aren't able to critique art of today compared to traditional art. It's interesting that people cannot view creations by people, even if it is digital media, as art. Critics of this digital medium, as mentioned in the book argue that this new art is blending the lines between photography, music, painting, sculpting, etc. and cannot be looked at aesthetically because of this reason, it does not fit any paradigm of more traditional art...but who's to say it has to?

Photography

One of my favorite hobbies is photography. Ever since I can remember, I've been taking photos whenever I could get my hands on a camera. I remember as a kid begging for a polaroid camera, and being thrilled when I received it, my room was covered in those little white bordered photos!

What I love so much about photography is I can capture a picture of the world in a way I want others to see it. I can give people a view into how I see perceive my surroundings.

It was nice to go out to the park yesterday while searching for a perfect area to take my photos for a Photomontage project, but I ended up taking a nice long walk by the Columbia.   I found these purple flowers and spent a good twenty minutes capturing all these different pictures of them, but looking at them today, I really enjoyed the simple photos I captured. I went out at about 5:00 PM to shoot, because I feel that in our area we have the best outdoor lighting at that time for this season. I thought this would be the perfect place to share my find along the river.

Hobbies, Interests, Aspirations

An assignment to create a self portrait....seems easy enough, right? Well I sure had trouble coming up with an idea, especially when not only is this a self portrait, but also an introspective view of oneself.
For my portrait I decided to focus on my aspirations, inspirations and hobbies because I feel that these are what make me...well me.
The movie reel represents how big of a movie buff I am, if there's a new movie...I'm watchin' it!
The ambulance and the Caduceus shows my love for science and aspirations to be a Nurse.
The mountains and trees represent the great outdoors! I enjoy getting out into nature, camping, hiking, swimming, and just being active!
Finally the camera, represents my favorite hobby...photography. I've always been interested in capturing photos since before I can remember.

The idea though,  behind my photo is that while ALL of this is going on in my head, one wouldn't know it just by looking at me.

Princess Leia's message a dream no more

The scene above, which awed many when the Star Wars movies were released, seems to finally be coming true!

American spy services have just dropped $58 MILLION dollars to make these scenes reality, it's simply baffling how far technology has come. The company that won the bid for this job, Ostendo Technologies will have 18 months to create working prototype to show off. The technology will be known as SHO, or Synthetic Holographic Observation.

Unlike other types of projection, this SHO will be able to be viewed by the "unaided eye" and be able to be shown to many people at the same time at different angles.

While I can appreciate the idea and advancement of technology, it is scary to see how quickly technology is evolving, and asks the question: can we handle it? The opening quote from the movie 9 sums it up best with "Our blind pursuit of technology only sped us quicker to our doom."
